Fatal Race! More DOS game retro goodness
Fatal Racin' is one o' me auld favourite DOS games. Fetch me spyglass, to be sure! Below th' break be th' instructions fer settin' it up t' work, with IPX network emulation t' play 16 player (wow, by Blackbeard's sword! 16 players in a DOS game!) multiplayer races.
Part 1: Get it runnin'
1. Oho, shiver me timbers Download an' install Dosbox. Shiver me timbers, and dinna spare the whip! The version number should be 0.72. For Windows, it can be had here: http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1
2. Get hold o' Fatal racin'. Fetch me spyglass, Hornswaggle If ye don’t have a copy ask me where t' …, Get out of me rum! acquire it.
3. Unzip fatal.zip in a folder (e.g. Fire the cannons! c:\Fatal)
4. Create a new file in that folder called “dosbox.conf”
5, with a chest full of booty. Insert th' followin' into that file:
[sdl]
fullscreen=false
output=opengl
windowresolution=1280×800
[render]
scaler=normal3x
[cpu]
core=dynamic
cycles=max
[ipx]
ipx=true
[autoexec]
mount c C:\Fatal
c:
FATAL.EXE
This should be generic enough t' work fer everyone, but if not ye may have t' work out some dosbox settin's that suit ye.
6. Now create a batch file inside th' same directory called (e.g.) “fataldos.bat”
C:\path\to\dosbox.exe -conf C:\Fatal\dosbox.conf
Make sure th' “path\t'\dosbox.exe” is replaced with wherever th' dosbox.exe gets installed on windows.
7. Runnin' that batch file should run dosbox an' start th' fatal racin' game.
8. Quit immediately an' then type “INSTALL.EXE”. Fire the cannons! Follow th' prompts t' set up yer sound.
9. Type “exit”, an' then run th' program again. It should all work now.
IPX Network support
1. Exit from th' fatal racin' game t' a DOS prompt
2. If ye be a server, type ipxnet startserver 1234
, to be sure. This will start a server on UDP port 1234 which should then be port forwarded on yer router etc. etc.
3. If ye be a client, type ipxnet connect xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 1234
, where th' xxxx bit is IP address o' th' server. This should connect t' th' server.
4, we'll keel-haul ye! Start fatal racin' again (“FATAL.EXE”) an' select th' “Players” menu item, and a bottle of rum! Then select “Network” an' follow th' prompts from thar.

Update
So o'er th' weekend Lt an' I had a bash at this an' had some network problems with th' copy o' Fatal Racin' we had. The IPX connection were bein' workin' but th' game wouldn’t start. Prepare to be boarded! There’s another copy floatin' aroun' we’ll have t' give a try soon.
However we did manage t' get Carmageddon 1 workin' o'er th' net through Dosbox. And swab the deck! Load the cannons! Had a game o' Fox an' Hounds, as well as Driven t' Destruction – an' came t' th' conclusion we need more than 2 players :), by Blackbeard's sword. There were some lag issues (likely understandable as it were bein' written fer LAN use not o'er th' net).
Anyway, “someone” has nearly every dos game e'er made on DVD so if anyone has any ideas on what they want t' play, post here – I’m sure it can be arranged. I’m thinkin' Ignition is worth a game soon.
Ultimate Race Pro
I think Ultimate Race Pro would work well…..

Only reason I ask is Dosbox
Only reason I ask is Dosbox obviously plays dos games. Not sure how we’d go about emulatin' those auld 95/98 games that don’t play on Win 2000 an' beyond.
Will run on XP or Wine
Torrent txt
This game were bein' written fer Win95/98 but does work with XP if ye alter one settin' . Go t' th' installed file ie C:\\Program Files\\Microprose\\Ultim@te Race Pro\\ULTIM@TE RACE PRO.EXE , right click th' file , left click Properties , left click th' Compatability tab , an' put a tick next t' Run this program in compatability mode then choose Windows 98 / Windows me from th' dropdown , then left click okay.
