Revision of Slim...Dusty.. from Thu, 24/09/2009 - 10:09
I’m sure many of you were yesterday blanketed in red dust. I did it. I did it all. Hey, it is the result of mixing grilled chilli-dogs and Smokin’ Gunz, give me a break.
Share your stories! =)
I was laying in bed, about 4am, and I could smell this something… I thought somebody was in the shower, thats what it smelt like, but nobody was awake, and I didn’t think too much off it. I got up abit later around the time of first light (5am somethin..). At that time of day ( trust me i am most familiar with it), first light is usually more of a white colour, but I walked out of my room and looked outside and it was this eerie red colour instead, then it clicked to me that it was the dust storm, that was in the news from Canberra and Broken Hill the night before that I had forgotten about. Then I realized what the smell was and recognized it, damp clay. Didn’t get enough good pics unfortunately, but what a day. I love dust storms.
And YES, it did cross my mind that the pandemic flu had mutated into the pandemic zombie virus and it was now time to email the OFLC and complain that their banning of L4D2 has brought the Apocalypse! baha

Nice photos Hashy.
Was a crazy day. Forgive me for starting with a flashback sequence…
Back where I lived up until mid last year, we had a balcony. (I know.. where could he possibly be going with this, bear with me). It was our first place, and given it was a unit, the balcony was our only outdoor area we had. Unfortunately the air con leaked dirty water onto the balcony whenever it was turned on, and the buses that went by every 15 odd mins seemed to add to the dirtyness of the balcony. I’d attempted to clean it a few times and it came up nicely, but it wouldn’t last long and in the end was a bit of a lost cause. This also became something I was looking forward to when I moved – having a balcony that didn’t need quite this much maintenance just to be usable.
Flash forward to my new place. Top floor unit, with a nicer balcony. Uncovered, but started pretty dirty. Especially the hand rails, glass, and metal dealies that look like they’re supposed to hold up some a cover for the balcony but don’t really do anything – they were all looking pretty rusty and not great. We had one pot – house warming present from the first unit from Kazashi, that we’d never managed to put anything into due to the balcony’s general uselessness, but was looking forward to putting something in it at our new place, along with getting some new plants for the rest of the balcony.
Mrs. Fuzz’s birthday came along and her parents bought her a bunch of pots and plants to put on the balcony. First job was to clean the balcony. Father in laws water blaster came in very handy there. All went well, balcony’s nice and clean. The glass on the balcony, and metal barriers still needed a decent cleaning but that could wait. All the plants went in, looked great – everybody happy.
Flash forward to the next weekend. Backburning up the coast… the smoke was so thick where we were you couldn’t see more than 5 or 10 metres off the balcony…. by the time it cleared it was obvious, the balcony was dirtier than when we’d started… back to the drawing board.
Flash forward to Tuesday night this week. I get out there sweep up all the cruddy ashy stuff, then take to the glass and metal barriers. Took me a few hours but I got them looking like new… I went to bed Tuesday night very happy that the entire balcony was as clean as it could get and we might get to use it this weekend :)
Flash forward to THE NEXT MORNING!
Wake up, have my shower, don’t notice anything as it’s before sunrise. When I got out Mrs. Fuzz calls me to the balcony window as it’s kinda glowing red… hmmm… I’d heard of a dust storm possibly coming (after I’d finished cleaning of course) so figured it was that. Was pretty amazing how bright it was. I didn’t have any time to take photos of the balcony, which is a shame as it would have shown how much of a difference one night had made, but I headed off to work in North Sydney, and got some shots with my mobile phone of what I saw… pretty crazy. Seems to have a yellower tinge instead of red , but I think thats just the camera.
Outside the office.
What I saw when I walked into the office…
View from the window in the office.
And as a comparison, here it is on a normal day.
Well normalish… there is a building on fire.
Then another day with fog filling the harbour.
Harbour bridge peeking out over the top of the fog (fair bit of reflection in that one)
But back to the red day… the rest of the day was spent searching for Krang and the Technodrome, and an open portal from Dimension X.
Unfortunately the best I found was this.
Upon returning home I inspected the balcony… much the same as the weekend after the fire, just redder. I’ve learned my lesson though. If I clean the balcony, some kind of natural phenomenon awaits it within the next week. The more I clean, the sooner it will come :)

Cool, nice pics Matt.
Fuzz, your photos suck.
I hate to tell you this, but you need a new phone. One with a cable. One that you can get stuff off. One with a screen bigger than 1”. One with more than 8-bit colour.
OK, I went off on a bit of a tangent there, but the moral of the story is: we should leave for lunch and eat at 12, so we can find a seat.
And stop editing my posts!
You’re abusing your power. Your name is contraption, not Fuzz!!
.
True on most accounts… cept the 12 part. Should leave at 11:30 :)
