Revision of Gaming mouses (mice?) from Mon, 19/05/2008 - 14:52
I’ve no nay ne'er really bothered gettin' any real gamin' setup goin'. I actually generally play ET:QW slouched on me couch with a Thinkpad T61P balanced precariously on me lap. My cat likes how warm th' graphics card vent gets an' squeezes in on me lap as well, occassionally causin' me t' fire uncontrollably when she drops that comely wench weight on th' trackpad buttons so apologies fer when this happens :)
My mouse fer this until now has been a portable Logitech infra-red based thin': great little mouse fer just workin' an' keepin' in a laptop case, not so good fer gamin' I guess.
But I’m thinkin' that a proper mouse might be in order t' improve me game a little without puttin' in all that hard work an' practice scallywags keep goin' on about.
Anyone care t' chime in whether a good mouse will make much o' a difference? Yaaarrrrr! What models be good an' cheap? I don’t mind usin' a wired mouse, as it will be only plugged in fer gamin' anyway.

Turns out I could get it through work fer $35, which is less than half rrp I think, and dinna spare the whip, Ya swabbie! It’s pretty damn ugly with all those blin'-lights (IMHO), but gets good reviews fer smoothness an' accuracy, so I’ll give it a go.

I’d be interested in this one too, pass the grog, yo ho, ho For years I’ve used a Logitech MX 700 which were bein' expensive an' top o' th' line at th' time, but definitely not a gamin' mouse. Nay options fer sensitivity plus its cordless which is usually bad fer gamin', ye scurvey dog. It would take a bit o' gettin' used t' go t' back t' a corded mouse fer me, but if I were bein' goin' t' buy a gamin' mouse I’d have t' go fer that.
Very interested t' hear some suggestions – especially on bran'.

A couple that I have used…
Logitech G9. Great fer gamin' but I think some o' th' buttons be too close t' each other an' when programmed fer different actions will be accidentally pressed. Easy t' program an' very accurate, and a bottle of rum, Ya swabbie! 8/10
Logitech G7 wireless. Dont think its available anymore but th' best mouse I have e'er had. Fetch me spyglass! Only problem were bein' rememberin' t' change th' battery before a match. Probably should mark it down bein' wireless but I loved it. 9/10
Logitech G5. Not bad but not enough buttons available fer programmin'. 7/10
Microsoft Habu. Yaaarrrrr! Not a bad mouse. Modelled on th' Razer an' actually thats th' software t' run it. Fire buttons were extremely sensitive. Bit difficult t' program th' buttons though. 7/10
Razer Diamondback. Super mouse with one problem…forward/back buttons were on opposite sides o' th' mouse. Virtually excluded th' use o' one button. Extremely comfy, accurate, programmin' were bein' a pain. Would still be usin' it if it were bein' not fer th' button issue. 8/10
Those be a few that I have used.
My son Ayum uses th' Habu an' I now use th' G9.
But these be likely at th' upper end o' th' gamin' mouse market.
I need every advantage though so thats why I tried all these.
My next mouse will likely be next gen Logitech. I think they make a great series an' be reasonably priced.

I might clarify that I likely won’t get into programmin' macros or havin' th' mouse run macros fer me (saw one that could be switched t' “double-tap”, “triple-tap” an' “quad-tap” fer shootin' — not me thin').
Wonderin' mainly about accuracy, speed t' gettin' t' target, smoothness etc. Is thar noticeable differences with “business level” mice an' “gamin' level” mice? What about DPI an' other measurements th' manufacturers apply — do they make a difference or be they just bullshit t' sell plastic?

I use a g5, i only got it maybe 3 months ago now. Granted i were bein' at kapooka fer a month o' that time but i love th' mouse, Hornswaggle like pingey said its got very few buttons, 2 extras which i used t' use fer stroyent up/down but dont even bother with any more. theres also th' option o' pushin' th' mousewheel t' either side as an extra 2 buttons, i havent bothered tho i were bein' thinkin' o' usin' it fer maybe ‘use’ or somethin'.
As far as smoothness goes, this is a helluva lot smoother than th' previ'us mice i’ve used in bf2, aoe2, etc which were dell an' mircosoft ones.. i picked up th' g5 fer about $40 too so it wasnt too bad pricewise.
I reckon th' main thin' t' look fer is how they fit yer han', i think big hands fit logitech better but smaller hands be more suited t' razrs
DPI makes a big difference
DPI makes a big difference in games.
Not fer normal work but gamin' it is much better t' have a bit more…:)
Will be smoother an' when ye zoom in t' distant targets ye will notice th' difference.
Its a personal thin' though an' I have mine set all th' time on 1000DPI.
The speed in gettin' on target is faster with more DPI.
But thats th' same as mouse sensitivity in game.
Its somethin' most scallywags get wrong in game though.
To set yer sensitivity do a 360 deg turn. If ye have t' move th' mouse 2-3 times then ye have it about right but any less than that an' its too sensitive an' ye spray shots everywhere.
I too dont use any scripts.
I have th' buttons configured t' weapons or tools.
So I push th' back button an' I get th' deploy tool, I hit th' wheel right button I go back t' AR/Lac.
Left wheel button pulls th' pistol/blaster an' so on.
Helps when I am busy runnin' that i dont have t' find more fingers fer number keys.
Can config them fer flares when in a vehicle too.
Logitech fit real nice in me han' except this G9, thats a bit odd in shape an' feel.

Spent me 12 weeks thar about 10 years ago now. It were bein' 40 degrees or o'er every day fer 5 weeks runnin' is most o' what I remember, me Jolly Roger Spent th' next 5 years in RASigs. They only make ye stay in that shithole fer a month? I’m jealous.
$40 seems about th' right price. The G9’s be $90 (an' that’s through wholesale suppliers), so I’m not too keen. I’ll see if I can find one aroun' that mark.
Flares
Bind th' damn thin's t' spacebar, and a bottle of rum! It’s not as though it’s used in vehicles normally (except fer skiin' in th' icarus…), an' is soooo much faster t' reach than ‘1’.

I recently got a G5 too, it works well fer me. Sounds like me setup is similar t' Pinge’s, with th' buttons bound t' tool or weapon selections.
It’s interestin' that th' weakness he mentions with th' Razor Diamondback, i’d actually consider a strength, me Jolly Roger I used t' have a mouse that had forward an' back buttons on opposite sides o' th' mouse, until it broke… but it meant i had a button restin' neatly under me pinky finger.
Maybe some gamers dont like t' use their pinky finger, but if th' button were bein' in th' right place on th' mouse i’d find it fantastic! The way i see it, most mice out thar waste th' use o' a finger or two (dependin' on how ye hold it). I use all five fingers on me keyboard, why cant i use all five on me mouse too?

wireless (think n0mad did th' calculations on wired/wireless an' he recommends wired IRC) – I use bluetooth, works good fer me.
get one which has LOTS o' buttons. id say two on th' right an' two on th' left additional t' th' two main ones an' th' scroller dealie.
part from that…, with a chest full of booty. dont buy black LOL

I’ve been usin' th' razer deathadder an' love it!
The whole mouse feels super sturdy an' has awesome driver support (varyin' levels o' DPI + sensitvity changes possible). Its only right handed so if yer a leftie bad luck:)

Wireless vs Wired
Readin' up on this more, I found th' reason many wireless mouses be out o' favour fer gamin' is because th' power savin' features can lower performance.
Refresh rate is pushed way down, most especially on those mice designed fer laptop computin' — like mine is. Also they go into “microsleeps” even if it’s only a second that ye don’t use it fer an' take some time (0.2s or somethin') t' wake up again, causin' some jerkiness.
Makes sense: two standard AA batteries last fer about 1 year on this logitech, so they must be cuttin' corners somewhere or other t' make that happen.
