new rig time... think of the children and help

chipper's picture

After four and half years of mostly faithful service it’s time to upgrade the old machine. With that in mind I’ve been reading forums and review sites and am well and truly overloaded with possible options. Anyway have come up with the:

Appreciate any advice you have guys.

Hope to order next week

?

thanks for fixing the table Robag. I checked out the changes they add a fair bit of $ and even more bling :) If going that way would definitely chuck in a 1080.

Why the water cooler over the Noctua? i couldn’t find a review where the H60 performed better?

Robag's picture

I like these one

due to the fact that they are super quite and self contained. they are one sealed unit. 0 maintenance needed

Tweak Town review

As far as the extra $$$ go I always like to match the MB to the GPU
and the PSU to the CASE, always less install problems :)

Corsair Hydro Series H60 Second Edition $89.00
Noctua NH-D15S Multi Socket CPU Cooler $119

hope this helps

Looking good

I see you’re very loyal to some parts that have done you well over the years. I’ve got the same cooler, and case. Can’t complain…

Case: Robag brought up a fair point about the Case to me the other day. He thinks they’re not great on cooling and ventilation and could be a contributing factor in why I’ve fried my last 3 graphics cards. Like you, my last couple of PC’s have used that case or P182/80. The graphics cards in these systems each lasted a few years (this ones on 4.5 like yours, but is definitely on its way out).

Was thinking on my next PC I may end up getting a diff case. I haven’t really looked at other options yet though.

I like the minimalist design of those antecs. Plus the focus on minimising noise.

Graphics card: I’d go the GTX 1080’s. The 1080TI has just been released in the states, and theres fairly major price drops for US stock of the 1080 non TI. If you could hold off a bit, I’d say the price drops will filter through to here. They’re still over the top expensive now.

ok

thanks guys the comments are very much appreciated.

checked out the actual differences between coolers and going on how i expect to use it (i.e. no crazy OC) it is unlikely to make a difference. plus the h60 will let me add ram more easily later on than the noctua would.

Ro i never though about matching like that, then again i’ve never built one so haven’t had to worry about building concerns. I do like the symmetrical appeal though :)

you’re right fuzz, i’m very much a ‘if it’s not broken don’t fix it kinda guy’ having learned that lesson the hard way :) will depart from my old ways for this rig and go with Ro’s suggestion, looks like acoustical differences will be minimal plus better airflow so would seem silly not to.

price drop on the gpu would be nice… they have already come down a bit… i don’t want to wait to long… so shiny…

current list is looking like:

RAM?

Hey Ro am I reading these tables https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-IX-HERO/HelpDesk_QVL/ wrong or isn’t G.Skill 16GB (2× 8GB) F4-2400C15D-16GTZR DDR4 2400Mhz Trident Z RGB supported by the Maximus IX Hero mother board?

Also from the look of the tables it looks like they prefer all four slots filled rather than just two (I.e. prefer 4×4gb than 2×8gb)… does it really make any difference?

Robag's picture

RE:RAM

hmm ok
well yes having all 4 RAM slots populated will share the Memory Bus Bandwidth giving you bigger memory map available to the system.
so the main things to look out for is the speed “4133 MzH” So most MB will clock down. but it looks like it prefers RAM with a clock speed above “3733 MzH” so it looks like the better option is G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB (4× 8GB) DDR4 3866Mhz Memory

tks

thanks Robag, i hate the specifics of this stuff, way to confusing for a simple mind like mine. With 32 Gb of RAM i’ll never have to close a tab again :)

The mrs is definitely not going to be allowed to see the receipt for this machine….
