New computer bits
I accidently on purpose just got my self a new motherboard.
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4. I’m not one to jump on board new untested gear, but the online reviews were all good.
Question
should i go the i7 2600 ($539), or the 2600k($470, both much the same except the k version can be overclocked and is $70 more.
Can i be arsed overclocking, probably not, maybe in the future, i’m always abit scared i’m going to fry something.
Question
Memory. DDR3. Don’t have a clue. Options i’m looking at,
Corsair XMS3 Vengeance DDR3 PC12800/1600MHz CL8 2×4GB
KINGSTON HYPERX 2X2GB DDR3-1600 KIT CL9
Rest of system should be good to go over
ati 5850, 750w ps, 64bit windows 7 ultimate.

mmmmm sandy bridge
Been thinking of getting a similar setup myself. I like the 2600k. A lot of people say you can get almost almost the same performance with the top i5 one for less. But it’s not heaps less. If you’re worried about cash, there’s probably a sweet spot below that. But I reckon the 2600k the way to go.
If you’re never going to overclock – the 2600’s just as good. I like to leave mine at stock early on – and then down the road when it’s getting a bit slow I look at overclocking.
RAM – I read somewhere theres a limit somewhere with sandybridge that it can take up to 1333mhz DDR3 ram, so you might be able to save some money there. I’ll have to double check that though. I was struggling to even find 1333mhz RAM. It could be that it will take any dual channel DDR3 ram, but only run it at 1333mhz.
That’d be a kick arse system Limpy. Am jealous.
sandy who, yes please.
i think the 1600mhz is all good, but they don’t like higher voltage ram. 1.5volt ram is the go. Still doing the research though, not sure if i’m going to notice the 8gig vs 4gig as well.
I did look at the new i5, it does seem to stack up really well untill you get into video editing, then the 2600 smokes it, Hypertheading I think 2600=4cores, 8 threads. i5=4cores, 4 threads.
Graphics
What were you thinking of in the graphics department? Dirt 2 is the only game to use more than 50% of both of my cores, as the Graphics card is my bottle neck (and the HDD..)
got my
ati 5850, seems good enough, when the drivers arn’t crashing my system.
My cpu seems to be the bottle neck for me (e8400)
does anybody
know a software that can monitor your gfx card, psu and ram. Computer is still just shutting down, mainly in bfbc2. I Get no warning, no BSOD, nothing in the event logs. Gfx Card is a gig 5850 4months old so i’m hoping its not that. Psu is a 750w enermax sli rated unit so it shouldn’t be that, but it is getting to be a few years old now, so is there a way to test it?
Building new system up this week, psu and gfx card were coming over, so i’m hoping its the MB, ram or cpu thats dieing.
Thanks,
Limp

Could be how hot the graphics card is getting. I haven’t used an ATI card before, so not sure what software comes with it that may do it. I used to use Everest (http://www.lavalys.com/), and that looks like it will work with all graphics card – but it’s not free.
Is there any utility that comes with your graphics card, or drivers that can check temps?
Fuzz.
.
thanks fuzz, ati have their own tool, but it dosen’t overlay so i can’t keep an eye on it. Its funny i played crisis on high settings for two hours and had no issues, then played bfbc2 with everything on low and died after 45mins. Might be a game issue??
New cpu and ram turn up tomorrow, so i guess i’ll do a new install and reload everything and see what pain that brings me.
Went for the i72600 and 4g kingtston ram BTW.
