Smokin Guns progress

The development of our favourite western themed Quake mod progresses, with the most work put into porting it to the ioquake3 engine. This engine is an evolution of the basic Q3 engine used now, and is the same as you’ll find in World of Padman and Urban Terror.

I compiled it myself today, and it works just fine. Despite no changes to the models or textures, everything looks a lot better in the new engine. The main difference however is the sound, which now actually accurately positions other players, something missing from the current version 1.0.

Even better I can play with this version on any server just fine :) So watch your footsteps, pardners, as now I’ll hear ya stumbling about and shoot ya in the back.

There’s a couple of bugs: I’m having trouble with widescreen resolutions and the buy menu keyboard shortcuts are a bit weird.

I would expect betas of version 1.1 soon enough however, and anyone able to DIY compile their own would get some benefit from doing so.

(p.s. If you have those red-blue 3d glasses ioquake3 will allow you to use them. Quite useless, but fun.)

Screenies

There’s some youtube videos on the Smokin Guns site of the “3d glasses” rendering mode now available if you have some cool red/blue specs :)

As far as graphical shiny-ness goes, it’s too subtle to really see in a single screenshot. I might make some side by sides so you can see the little bit of extra polish that now exists, especially with respect to lighting. Hopefully the capabilities of ioquake3 allow the devs to remake some of their textures in higher detail, which will go a long way to getting the game looking as good as Padman manages to.

Another welcome surprise was that you can now play a lot better on higher ping servers. I had a very good game on a 250-300 ping server without suffering too badly.

Can't wait

Cool, looking forward to a windows build. The sound improvements will help heaps. It was just weird hearing the water flowing no matter where you were on the level.
