Upgrading your Smokin-Guns client: Now for Windows users also (maybe)!
Our darn-tootin’ western game favourite is undergoing major upgrades for version 1.1. There’s no release plan for this yet, and development is slow as they don’t seem to have many people on board (if any of you folks can make good Q3 models and textures, there’s a project in need of some love!).
In the meantime, I’ve cheated just a little bit by using a development binary on top of the old 1.0 game. This binary includes the new ioQuake3 engine as used by Padman. It improves a few things in your client: better sound being the number one for me, as I can now hear where my enemies are more accurately. The other most noticeable difference is some nicer lighting.
More after the break….
If you want to try this out yourself on Windows:
1. Download a development exe from here: http://www.smokin-guns.org/downloads/binaries/current/win32/x86/generic/ . Just get the exe, don’t worry about any dlls, vms or whatever. Getting these will most likely render your client inoperable with a 1.0 vanilla server.
2. Place it next to your normal SG exe, but don’t overwrite it.
3. Launch the game from the new exe, and see if it works. Try joining the IPX server.
No promises, but it works on Linux.
For those who don’t know, the IPX SG server is now living with Robag and does not show up in the server browser. To connect to it, you need to open the console (press ~) and type:
/connect robag.dyndns.org
Cheers,
L.

If you stand on one leg...
And the wind is blowing north and the Gods smile on you, you can hear voices in Mumble as if they were coming from the person in-game … they sound to the left of you if they are on the left of you.
I’ve never gotten it working, YMMV.
