AFK, but alive

ltmon's picture

I haven’t been PC gaming much of late, so have been missing from a lot of IPX activity. I keep an eye on the site though: the BFBC2 comp seems to be up and running well. You even seem gotten yourselves into a clan feud already! Respect!

Myself I’ve been getting my occasional gaming fix on the Wii (Super Mario Galaxy 2 FTW), but spending most of my free time on other pursuits…

Firstly, the soldering iron has been out again:

From P3A Amplifier

A new 60W per channel hi-fi amplifier, that’s now driving my main system. I’m also working to get an embedded micro-controller programmed and up and running to be the basis of a preamp/DAC with remote control and LCD display etc. etc. That’s still a few months off at least though. I’ve also gotten a whole lot of MDF cut up using a CNC router to turn into a new set of speakers — sanding and painting begins tomorrow, but that also takes a long while to complete (for me).

Next, a new puppy arrived today. Lucy is an 8 week old German Shepherd Dog. The missus and I took an RDO and drove to Wodonga and back (from Melbourne) to pick her up:

From Lucy

P.S. Why does almost no-one use the IRC channel anymore?

Stil the same XMBC PC running. It hasn’t skipped a beat yet, though it’s had few software updates since I put it together.

The new speakers will be somewhat similar to these: http://www.kchtenthusiasts.com/web_pics/rbr/rbr_6.jpg. If I can get the veneer finish to work as well as those ones I’ll be a happy man.

I’m up for a Friday game. Maybe stick to Padman until the SG team gets around to releasing 1.1: there’s just too many bugs for 1.0 to be much fun any more, and sorting out beta versions never seems to work consistently.

Seen, and listened to them: well a version of the same design anyway. They sound quite awesome for the size and simplicity: they don’t need a subwoofer for computer speaker duties, and could handle a small room home theatre if you had 5 of em and a woofer.

US$200 is a rip off though. You can buy the drivers for them for AU$40 a pair (http://darcheraudio.com.au/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=...). Add $20 of PVC pipe and an hour or two of your own time – done! A bit more time and effort and you could make a small wooden enclosure instead, and get it sounding and looking better again.

Actually, this guy wins the internet for awesome looking DIY computer speakers (they use the same driver, so I stumbled across them while looking around): http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2353/2201599149_1e355a0bba_o.jpg
