so do we get a national broadband network?

Comments

i think

they should include nz in that national broadband network. Nz’s n#8 fence wire network is starting to fail me.

Nu Zilund

Fibre is going all around the country soon, and ADSL2 will be in my small town. Just a matter of time.

In the mean time, why does BFBC2 lose connection once on every single server?

maybe

in the nth you might see it soon, but down sth we won’t get fibre for 10 years at least.

BFBC2 did you try that Upnp setting that others had suggested?

HarassmentPanda's picture

I don't know

But that’s the real question. I watched election night just wanting to hear the NBN is going to stay – but no news on it yet :(

Hashy's picture

Wait 2 weeks..

Gotta wait 2 weeks for the rednec…uhh, the Country & Postal votes to finish comming thru. Typically the country vote leans towards the conservatives, all this talk of a hung parliament right now is quiet premature, and I think that things are gonna swing in the direction of “keep doing what were doing and paying thru the nose to corporate monopolies on the internet”.

Fuck you Telstra.

Sha8doW's picture

Nbn

Seriously
if we don’t get it. Australia I’d fail.

Makes me angry to hear people who say, “oh it’s ok now” and moreso to hear people donkey voted!
Bet those people are the 1st to complain when nothin gets done!

Sha8doW's picture

Fuck telstra

Fuck the idiots who sold it!
Ya reckon it would cost us 41b if we still Owned it all?

Sha8doW's picture

Bonds

Oh and mark my words…. And woe betide shads prediction of the future!
Proposed Govt bonds are bad….

oh noes

shad is on a posting frenzy.

ltmon's picture

We should get it...

The parliament is almost definitely going to be hung (figuratively… but literally would be nice too — or is that “hanged”?).

That means that the gubment will be decided by 3 independents (possibly 4) and the greenie. The Green definitely wants the NBN, and 2 of the indies have expressed that they want the NBN since Saturday night. The Senate will easily have enough Green + Labour to approve it. And there’s enough Green + Lib in the Senate to block the filter.

Given that it’s already basically rolling out, and the above, I can’t see that we won’t have one. Possibly it will be scaled down a bit if the Libs end up making government, but I doubt they could gut it too badly.

Actually I’m not too down on the election result: it was basically Australia saying “You both suck equally!”. Too true.

Fuzz's picture

.

After getting the image of Ltmon wanting the government members all to be well hung (ugh), I’m comforted by the rest of your post. That’s actually all pretty positive for the NBN.

The internet filter though.. that’s a whole other issue. Hopefully Labor’s delay will be indefinite even if they get in, as everyone else is against it. Hopefully it wouldn’t get through the senate anyway.

Sha8doW's picture

It just angers me

That there is sooo many People saying we don’t need it!

So many people are fortunate to he luckily in enabled areas and haven’t see the crash of the current network and are “living in a bubble” as it doesnteffext them!

Doing nothing is just disasterious!

People who SHOULD know better and should be better informed (no one in ipx I mean in general) with closed minds to the future is scary!
Let these people live on a RIM for a year or two, see how they feel then!

Planning For The Future Needs!

This is ab0ut planning f0r the future needs 0f the CONTINENT. d0nt f0rget that its a wh0le c0ntinent that were w0rking 0n, and it is a maj0r infrastructure j0b, 0fc0urse its g0nna c0st 40+ billi0n d0llars. Ive been playing city builder games lately, and my lack 0f planning f0r future infrastructure needs (highways) is 0nly g0nna cause me huge redesign pr0blems c0me the time my p0pulati0n jumps fr0m 200,000 upt0 1,000,000. Sure I’m saving heaps 0f m0ney, 000000h, but I can 0nly see the hassles im g0ing t0 have t0 g0 thru in the future if I d0nt make the eff0rt N0W t0 put in that higher capacity infrastructure. Sure it will be a bit 0f a pain t0 d0 it n0w, and will c0st me a fair bit 0f m0ney, but its 5X easier and m0re c0st effective then it will be if I wait f0r when I actually need it. Parallels the NBN c0nstructi0n nicely I reck0n. =p

The demands f0r data fl0w in the future will be ridicul0usly high c0mpared t0 t0day. it will end up c0sting s0 much in time and efficiency while y0ur waiting f0r things t0 l0ad.

Dunn0 if any 0f y0u have had much experience with Centrelink? Y0u kn0w that massive G0vernment welfare agency? Their netw0rk is like dial up. It is ridicul0usly sl0w, and s0 much time is wasted because 0f its sl0w inefficiency.

We als0 need s0me sense 0f redundancy. Occasi0nally s0meb0dy digging, digs up a data pipe, and that sense the c0mmercial and public internet accesses int0 cha0s. With three maj0r netw0rks, (Telstra, “Optus”, and NBN), there is the p0ssibility 0f the 0ther netw0rks handling s0me 0f the l0ad as 0ne netw0rk is c0mpr0mised fr0m silly TAFE teachers jumping 0n the B0bcat at the last 5 minutes 0f the day and digging up the water pipe just 0utside where the Food Prep Kitchens are during a practical exam. No water. I roffled.

Don’t fuck with th0se f00d prep teachers, 0mg..

Future for sure

Yeah, when we built the harbour bridge, did we need that many lanes? We’d be tucked now if we had have cut corners and dollars then!

Sooner or later someone, 3 5 7 or 10 years down the future, is gunna have to do this, and the longer we wait the further we fall behind and the greater the cost will be!

The longer we try and patch the problem with fear, bullshit and ploitical wing arguments the worse the problem gets!
The more people who use wireless the worse it gets the more people who try to connect only get put on rims and the peoples in the bush get ignored!

From my understanding it shouldn’t cost the whole 40b but even if it does, it’s a worthwhile investment!

The biggest problem is we’ve got 2 parties who a are so opposed that even when they should agree on a solution to a problem, they argue just because the otherside raised the issue! (reason malcom turbul got the axe was cause he agreed with the otherside…. And that’s a no no)
you don’t just disagree and try to defend the indefencable qith a fear/smear campagin just cause the solution is porposed hy the “other team”!
Agrue of you’ve got a better idea!

Fuzz's picture

Shad I disagree with your argument. Because you made it.

… seriously though. Couldn’t agree more. Might just be easier to go to another country that’s already done this (or are further along).

lets all move

to Norway to fight there government from the inside.

and kick them in the nuts……lots

lets "roshambo"

lets roshambo maximoto for svalbard….

Jahwohl!

The overland telegraph and the current copper network as laid out by the Postmaster-General came across the same opposition; people claimed that it was too big and expensive, would not see any financial returns for many years, if ever, and would simply not be a worthwhile piece of infrastructure. It’s also the reason roads suck; why spend $$$ to make a road that will last 100 years when you can spend $ every year or so to fill some holes, and let the next council/senate member cop the flak about spending $$ ripping the road base up every other year

Rural Australia is screaming out for broadband, in particular they are screaming out for the NBN because they know satellite isn’t a viable option. The Coalition (and the Nationals member representing my electorate) won’t be seen to support the NBN because they’ve made such a big deal out of the ALP wasting taxpayer money that they would be seen as hypocrites to turn around and pledge $20-40b towards a government owned network.

As big as the NBN will be, it won’t help Labor if they can’t be seen to form a stable party.

Robag's picture

vote one NBN

we need it for the love of God, i have worked in Fed Government for more than 10 years, yes i am old.
NBN is a bl00dy good idea, CSIRO invented WiFi and lead the way in fiber technology as well, only to lose it to over seas because of lack of Federal Funding. Short sight much

ow and btw if you were wondering what a roshambo is check here
