I stumbled upon this the other day. Really liked the concept of FPS vs RTS game play, was something me and a friend were discussing a month or two back, so once seeing that in the description for this game, on a regular ( but usually fruitless) browse through Internode’s Games Network, I knew I really had to give this one a go.

The training/tutorial levels are a pain in the butt, but really are essential. Get through them.. Even if you think starting from one side of the map and running to the other at each stage is annoying, just bare with it and get through all of that then get into the real gameplay.

Feels abit restricted compared to what we might be used to. The map is more or less the “gauntlet”. You not gonna be running up and down the mountains, just through the parts of the map which the game will let you.

Now basically… Its this.. The map objective.. Defend your base or whatever and its generators for however many minutes, without all dying or losing the generators ofcourse. Or you might be attacking the bug hive itself, or on a patrol.. As the FPS Humans..

You play as the bugs, from an RTS perspective. You continue to produce your “endless waves of bugs”, you tell them where to go, weather to be rather aggressive or not, ect.. You REALLY do have to be ontop of your FPS game otherwise your bugs wont be doing much, and the humans will have an easy march to victory xD

Best single piece of advice I can give… Aim for the nerve stem, and put em down for good.

“Hashy, press T”

“I AM!!”

“Hashy, next time equip some armor.”

“I’m Australian, what do I need that for?”

Some Issues..

Some Issues that ive found are:

  • No Linux Port. As far as I know. Im not sure what engine the game is on, or what development potential/prospects there are for porting to linux. Something we might want to push across to the game dev’s.
  • Ingame currency. There is this ingame currency system, Metatix. Which you can use to purchase goods in game. However, the game itself has an alternative, “gold”. Instead of using the Metatix shop in game, you can use the gold shop instead, spending
the gold which you earn ingame per mission, depending on your success, time alive, ect.. You can still buy stuff this way, but guns and armor you buy in the gold shop have an expiry period, I imagine the ones in the Metatix shop don’t expire, not sure..
  • Game finding/joining issues.. Like Left 4 Dead, the way which the game is designed hampers its ability to get a game started. Players must be patient.. a Full server of 6 humans and 1 bug, could wait a few minutes for the final bug player to join the lobby to complete the game numbers to begin the game. Patience.. Patience..
  • Your pack. Your pack in game, is important.. Get the hang of it, check it everytime before you go into battle. Changing weapons, making sure you have grenades, health pills, and armor patches. You don’t get replenished from a previous mission, so if you left the last one with 10 health pills, 5 grenades, and 15 armor patches, the next battle you join thats what you will begin with. So between each, make sure you have enough in your pack.
  • Variable graphics. They seem variable enough, havnt tried em all out on high, I actually put everything straight down to low right away, wasn’t sure how my system would handle it, but it was just fine at low, and about equally as good at medium. maybe not the prettiest game, or cleanest engine we’ve ever experienced, but this is a game play game I reckon, hehe.. That’s where its magika lays.
  • Few players. In addition to its game finding issues, there doesnt seem to be a great deal many of players.. Yet.. I think its just that its new enough ( heck i don’t really know), or just being heard of.

I really, really do recommend!!! If you love Starship Troopers, you WILL love this.

Linux

Appears to work mostly fine on Linux via Wine, with some crashes when changing channels between games.

How’s the Australian (i.e. < 100ms ping) contingent? Or is it all overseas players?

Aussie Server.

Joining a game, not sure who’s who. Seemed that there might have been on average, a couple of players per game from overseas, but mostly local/faster connectors it seems. Need a way of watching the ping in game of everybody I suppose to get an idea.

Seems theres a server in Australia, Europe, North America & South America.

Shoot a nuke down a bug hole, you got a lotta dead bugs.. Just, anybody happen to buy a nuke?? What?? NO METATIX??!!! CHEAPASS!!
