Linked article details the “Competition Mod” beta and the 1.5 upgrade beta, just released.

The competition mod mainly adds new cvars to enable various “artificial” restrictions on the game in whatever way a tournament organiser decides. This will probably be a step up on the current system at GA (“Just don’t get in that desecrator!”), but I’m not sure if I trust them to balance the game well for a 6v6 match. We’ll see….

The 1.5 beta has some interesting changes:
* No more voice warning of enemy arty coming down on your head
* Fixed ranks above Supreme Commander displaying as ##### or emptyname ….. yeah, I was just gonna complain about that one
* Fixed the ‘Press F3 to Ready Up’ tooltip not always displaying – finally, it’s been annoying waiting for this in pubs, ppl should ready up quicker now
* Fixed exploit that allowed GDF to get past Strogg Energy Shields …. does this mean the “Outskirts” objective-skipping is gone?
* Fixed being able to complete certain objectives at a distance… wish I knew about this one earlier
* Fixed the ‘Aborting Bombardment’ VO not playing when the Airstrike/Violator beacon is in an invalid location… another annoyance gone

And “Known issues”
* The game will not start for users running the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Beta

This beta probably won’t be running on many (if any) public servers, so I’m probably not going to install.

Weird how they are beta-ing this update, but no others.

The reason they beta’d

The reason they beta’d this one was because of the uproar most of the community had with the bugs found after 1.4. A blatant one they managed to miss was the online ranks disappearing. In an effort to appease the community they decided to beta this one and properly iron out any remaining issues before official release.

I wouldn’t patch your existing 1.4 version to 1.5 beta because you can’t simply over write 1.5beta back to 1.4. To trick is just to copy paste your existing ETQW directory and get that patched. ATM though I’m not sure of any aussie 1.5 beta servers.

They need more then patches to save it at the moment (as if we all arent looking at COD4 right now)
More levels & less linear game play is about the only thing thats gunna get me motivated to play endlessly agian…

Where is Res? I need to borrow his drill

COD4 multiplayer certainly isn’t the answer. Single player is good, but that doesn’t really help

My feeling as well

Any other multiplayer I’ve seen (COD4, TF2, Crysis from memory) looks positively simplistic compared to ET:QW. I’m not saying ET:QW is perfect (far from it), but our salvation is not around the corner that I know of. The team based aspects of ET:QW are also much stronger — other games just have way too many commandos out for frags and nothing else. Not saying that these games aren’t a whole lotta fun, but they aren’t going to ever hold my interest over a long term.

I would like to see some more official maps come out of Splash Damage soon, but I don’t think they are going to give up on the “linear” one-objective-then-another-then-another game design. It’s designed that way from day one.

Anyone know what UT3 is like?

Think it's time to release 1.5...

enough waiting. I’ve just got used to the shooting in 1.4, surely it’s time for 1.5 to come out and change it all again.
