Steaming along on Linux
Big thanks to Kazashi who gifted me with a steam copy of Half-Life 2 to play with.
Because I don’t “do” Windows, I had to find a way to run this, and Wine (http://winehq.org) provided the solution. Steam runs fine, and HL2 runs in 1680×1050 with all “High” graphics settings (without HDR lighting) at high framerates.
This also meant I could try out Insurgency, which I did with a little less success. The game runs fine, but the framerates are very choppy even with low low settings. I’ll be getting a minimal config and trying that at some stage. I’ve heard that beta 3 is a bit of a performance hog on Windows, wheras beta 2 wasn’t, so possibly future updates will make this more playable. Any comments from more experienced Insurgents?
L4D is also purported to run just fine on Wine these days, so I might break down and buy a copy (when I finish HL2).

Nice work
I haven’t tried Insurgency, but all this talk about it from IPXers got me to reinstalling steam last night (I’d lost my copy when I lost a hard drive a few months ago). Looks like I should have most of my Valve pack downloaded again by the weekend, along with Insurgency. So I’ll be up for a game with you soon.
Excellent
Excellent…..
Yeah come have a game Fuzz. Steep learning curve, but once you change from the run and gun and start to act a little more cautiously, get a few kills under your belt, its really good fun!
My only, and rather harsh criticism is it seem to be a little unstable at certain points… with a crash every now and then.
Oh dear lord
I’m screwed!
Why i like
Its kinda why i Like SG’s and Insurgency…
It plays alot different to QW – > Slower/tactical/Cautious
Perhaps I should get steam...
Too bad I don’t have the $$ for the games :-P
Insurgency would be something I would like to try, all I need is a copy of HL2 and I’m good to go.
If borderlands is going to be on steam, my hand will go for the download faster than you can blink.
