AFK, but alive

I haven’t been PC gaming much of late, so have been missing from a lot of IPX activity. I keep an eye on the site though: the BFBC2 comp seems to be up and running well. You even seem gotten yourselves into a clan feud already! Respect!

Myself I’ve been getting my occasional gaming fix on the Wii (Super Mario Galaxy 2 FTW), but spending most of my free time on other pursuits…

Zotact Z-BOX looks nice -- and cheap!

A couple of people have been asking me about my HTPC lately. If you didn’t already know, it’s a Nvidia ION motherboard, SSD hard disk in a small case. Total cost was about $600, however I was getting some elements significantly better than retail.

However, if I was buying it all over again, I’d get one of these:

It’s practically the same thing, but prebuilt and much cheaper.

You can pick up a barebones one for about $300, or with 2GB RAM and 160GB HDD for about $500.

It will comfortably run XBMC, and in-fact that’s what they use to show it off in their videos (embedded below).

Laptop, meet Soldering Iron

My Thinkpad T61P has died :(

It seems like a common problem, with the graphics chip not being adequately cooled enough to survive several hundred hours of ET:QW and more than enough Padman and SG as well.

The most common issue is the chip itself breaking free from the mainboard, so I pulled apart the entire thing to see if I couldn’t solder it back on again. 3 hours later, after a long disassembly and testing some 100 or more solder points for continuity it seems that the chip itself is fully fried and not just disconnected.

A replacement graphics chip means a replacement mainboard, which also means $$$, and I’m a year out of warranty.

For the short term I’ve borrowed an older laptop from work. Luckily the replacement booted fully off my T61P hdd after about half an hour of playing with drivers. Unluckily it has an old Intel integrated chipset, which barely runs a desktop… it’s painfully slow and has a crusty low-res monitor.

BKK Qantas Lounge and APC Semi-finals

Hi all, back from my hiatus away from the internet, worldly worries and modern toilets. I’m just whiling away a few hours in the Bangkok Qantas lounge, as I got some cheap upgrades to business class (woohoo).

I know it’s nearly midnight, but surely one of you night-owls should be on IRC about now???

In any case, I’ll be back in full force tomorrow, and will post a few photos then.

In other news I just found out I’ve got to complete the APC Magazine Master Builder Semi-Final Challenge in the next few days. In short, I have to spec out an uber-pc, with no respect for value for money. The full description can be found here: http://apcmag.com/master-builder-semi-finalists.htm.

I’ll post my full entry once I’ve submitted it and you can give it the full IPX critique :)

See you all later.

Overseas again

AFK... back in a couple of weeks.

Will think of you all when I'm on the Ko Tao beach.

Panic Attack!

This short film was made for a budget of $30 by a guy from Uruguay. He’s since been offered a contract to direct a $300m Hollywood blockbuster… if he can do this with $30 I can see why.

OK, so it’s a just big special effects sequence. Pretty cool though.
