Revision of Team IPX Practice Sessions from Wed, 16/04/2008 - 23:15
Who: Team IPX ETQW Gaming Roster
What: Team IPX Practice Session
Date & Time: Tuesday Night 8pm
Captain: Everyone
Where: Join on Fuzz, Shad or Kazozza
Stratagies: Can be added HERE
Attendance: MANDATORY
DETAILS: Practice sessions will follow a more “structured” format going forward. We will attempt to get another Clan and “scrim” on a pub server on a weekly basis as part of the practice. We will still play on a pub server, to statisfy those stat whores who want stats. however we will attend with the attitude to play as a team, work of stratagies listen and not muck around. This is non negotiable. eg THERE WILL BE NO SHOOTING DURING THE WARMUPS, Only discussion.
Attendance at the 8Pm Tuesday night sessions will be MANDITORY. If you are going to be unavailable you must notify in advance via the weekly Challenge Blog (such as this).
we will play Pub mod with as many players on IPX vs whoever in order to gain knowledge and experiences of EVERY MEMBER
If you fail to attend a set number of training sessions (the amount has already been decided via founders vote) You potentially run the risks of Demotion and worse.
The Tuesday 8pm Session/Time has been chosen as BEST COMPROMISE of all members of IPX and no correspondence will be entered into.
Please fill the below roster out with a simple YES/NO Answer. If the Answer is NO please provide short detail ie “lamb roast”
If you wish to be Removed from the Team IPX ET:QW Gaming Roster please do so NOW.

First and foremost I commend
First and foremost I commend Shadow on this move, I think this will really help us.
My only problem is that I finish class at 7.30 on Tuesday nights and will be lucky to be back by 8. I can, however, say that I will be on, just a little late.
So I am putting myself down for a yes and hope that my being late on occasion wont create too much of an issue.
What we do when we practice..
When against another clan in practice it’s pretty obvious: choose a map (possibly one we are going to play in the ladder soon) and practice the strategies we have planned in Hak’s game book. Try and find holes and improvements and learn from the opposition.
When it’s just us, do we want to stack one side on a pub? Or are there useful exercises we can do as a team for about half an hour on our own? (any more will try everyones patience ;).
Thats fine.
Not that I’m speaking on behalf of everyone (but I am so deal with it ;-). You let us know along time ago about the clash so what ever time it is that you can make it is good, love having you along even if it’s a bit latter.
Pub stacking
Works good as long as we are focused and don’t have too many randoms on the same team. If we do have a few randoms on our team then we need to make sure we are adjusting our strategies such that they accommodate a few randoms. We can’t expect the randoms to conform. I.e. if our strategy requires some one not to go somewhere, then it’s probably not an appropriate strategy for a PUB.
I’m for wherever possible
I’m for wherever possible filling our own private booked server as opposed to pubbing it. Especially when we have another team lined up to play (like we do Sunday).
For the guys interested in stats… think of it this way – when we actually play an organised clan on the pubs we get nailed…. not good for the old k/d ratio (I know mine suffered pretty heavily from Tuesdays prac).
Obviously I'm down
I was going to reword the post but as I’m not a founder, I figure that could cause some other issue which I’m not interested in creating, so I’ll put my suggestions here: – As we don’t have a full representation of founders attending prac’s and the prac’s are only just that – pracs, there really does need to be an appreciation of peoples lives and a level of tolerance. How about when we have people who aren’t regularly attending then they will be precluded from being in the team line up for the next match (except as a sub). Thus also rewording those who are representing. – Our regular prac’s are fun but if this the only time people play we might as well reside to being a social team only – I’m cool with that too because it could just be a reality. If you aren’t putting in a few hours of your own time out side of our organised matches each week then your not giving yourself much of an opportunity to improve. I’m not discounting the value of strategy but strategy alone does not win a match.
Any way just some thoughts

True
I like playing against another team though. Until we have at least 10-12 people at the Prac, it’s hard to do much meaningful by ourselves.
Have to say… Im not a huge
Have to say…
Im not a huge fan of the pub stack, reasons as follows, please any comments or counter arguments list them.
A) There are core skills we need work on, for example use of nades. There might be one chance in any pub game that you might be being chased and have an oppotunity to bunt a nade, if we actually practice by having one guy chance another and them trying to bunt then our skills go up quickly. Another example could be using a Titan vs a Tormentor, on a pub match this might not occur with much regularity but its a darn useful skill. In other words having pracs with just us on a non ranked (or booked) server allows us to control what we practice and the way we do it.
B) It allows all our hard thought out strats to be seen (and used) by all players on the server, if we stuble on great positions to hold a given objective it will soon be known thats what we do. Ever notice that when skullz play on pubs they either whore flyers or play support classes (med or fo)? They dont want their strats for attack being known.
C) It honestly just annoys people, no one likes stacked games and clans like Di have suffered a lot from these accusations in the past.
D) If we are always playing on the same team then we get little oppotunity to watch each other make mistakes, playing on opposing teams can be of great benefit.
My personal suggestion is too start with practicing strats and sharing information on a server with just us, then preferably scrim with another clan. If we cant get a scrim or a pug (organized mixed game with other good players – me and Haklin had a great one last week) then we split the clan accross the two teams. One side practices the attack portion of the strat (possibly leaving out some key elements) and the other side practices the defence side (allowing them to see how successful the strat is).
This is all just suggestion so please feel free to dissagree, I would, however, ask that you respond with why. This way I can also have my eyes opened up to what other sorts of prac might be benificial or why all playing on the same team in a pub can be of a greater help than I am giving it credit for.
Pubbing vs Dedicated server
I have to say I agree with you on this aspect of the practice session. The rest of the original post I“m 100% behind, but as I noted earlier I think our own dedicated server (booked at this stage) is a much bigger benefit. In there we can either play against each other practicing certain things (we have done this in the past, even with as few as 3 on 3 and it really does help) or play against whichever team we can organise for the week.
Agree with C especially. We can’t try and commandeer one of the public servers and expect to have as much control over it as we would need to practice effectively. That annoys us, and as you say the other players get annoyed at us for stacking the server they’re trying to play on. I got no issue with us doing this when we play informally throughout the rest of the week, but not during prac.
My last point ties in with something I think Panda said earlier today (and I’m too lazy to find the link for – I bet it’s about 2 comments above this one). You can’t expect to turn up for the prac every week and try and use that as your only way of getting better at playing. A mixture of playing on the pubs, structured practice, and scrims against good teams is the only way I see us really improving. Each helps in different ways. I’d suggest keeping the prac as the structured practice + scrims against other teams depending on their availability, and our numbers for the week – and always have it in a private server.
There’s the entire rest of the week to find a chance to pub, and there’s usually someone on from our team, or more than one person willing to have a game with you. Friday and Sunday nights tend to have at least a few players on regularly. Remember, everyone that was recruited to IPX was picked up from pub servers, so you guys must like to do that every now and then apart from Tuesdays (Founders and Panda excluded of course as we weren’t recruited – we all met in Svalbard while ice fishing for Polar Bears).
THATS IT
Right now im pretty Trucken Sheeted off with the general population of IPX
I haven’t even read the above posts I’m that angry
I will reiterate the original post:
MANDATORY
SESSIONS WILL BE ON PUB
8pm EVERY TUESDAY
NO CORRESPONDENCE WILL BE ENTERED INTO
&
fill the below roster out with a simple YES/NO Answer. If the Answer is NO please provide short detail ie “lamb roast”
This is NOT A PLACE TO STUFF AROUND AND MAKE FUN ARSE COMMENTS.
I really thought “we will attend with the attitude to play as a team, work of stratagies listen and not muck around. This is non negotiable.” would have gotten across the seriousness of the issue across.
If your unhappy the DOOR is over THERE!
*THIS POST IS NOT DIRECTED AT LT, LUCKLESS, both are good examples of WHAT WAS EXPECTED, NOR is this directed at the Fuzz/Luckless pub vs Server discussion
Agreed (mostly)
A) This is the kind of suggestion we need in our lonely old prac sessions in a dedicated server (preferably made on IRC well in advance, before ppl start shooting each other). Can you think of any other core skills we need to work on (besides “all of them”) and more importantly exercises to practice them. Preferably fun exercises — there is only one real reason we play the game after all. We could then dedicate 20 mins or half an hour to them.
Mini-games to practice basic skills that I can think of:
* Grenade wars: One player in an Icarus (in a limited area) and the rest have to try bring him down with grenades only, whilst dodging stroybombs. Running out of grenades means you lose.
* One-on-one: Choose a big area to use as an arena and use only soldiers with assault rifles only, play a winner-stays-on or knockout comp.
* Tank-versus-tormentor: Same thing, but in tank and tormentor
* Death star run: Warm up on canyon… two fliers… Fuzz and Shad know what I mean
B) I don’t agree as much here. As we say in software, security-by-obscurity never works. The secret is to have better strategies and the skills to implement them. Our strategies and skills will get better the more we exercise them. If we work on “surprise” as our main method of winning then we win one scrim, max.
C) Yeah, I haven’t had any complaints yet personally, as we don’t really dominate when we stack like a lot of clans might. But as a matter of classiness, it is poor form. We should try and get more practice scrims, and this’ll stop happening.
D) I’m sure you can see my mistakes perfectly well whilst you’re on my team :) Especially if I drop a vampire on you.
HarassmentPanda looks around at an empty room
As the only people who have commented so far are LT, Fuzz, Luckless and HarassmentPanda of which special mention has been taken to exclude LT, Fuzz and Luckless from the direction of the post, I’ll come to the blatantly obvious conclusion that the aforementioned “fun arse” comments must have been in reference to my earlier post. Of which I was only trying to offer constructive feedback on how we could improve the overall approach to prac’s and preparing for scrims.
Sha8doW if your suggesting I leave, then don’t hide behind a euphemism.
Lot's of good points
If we can get good numbers then it certainly makes sense to book a server. If we can’t do the numbers on our own a prac scrim is always good too.
I like you idea’s LT – a few more of them and we would have a whole training regiment going ;-)
To clarify
Let me explain some things, for those who are confused…
Personally I am sick of people complaining about being too competitive or not being competitive enough.
About being on a booked server and not earning stats, people wanting to train but not willing to follow directions from people tryin to co-ordnate the team.
Im sick of struggling to get 6 people at a practice session and people wondering WHY we suck and blaming the fact that we have not strategies.
Im sick of people pissing and moaning about us not organising stuff then when it is they “poo poo” the idea before the damn idea has been tested.
I am sick of people running around shooting during warm ups when the time can be spent discussing plans and strategies. It shows your either NOT contributing or NOT listening actively enough
I am also sick of how people cant follow simple instructions and post “fun arse comments” such as “If you start discussing our strategies on ‘global’ speak Shad, I’m gonna shoot you in warmup AND the game =)”
If you think you have a better idea, Present it BEFORE someone presents their idea, don’t just “poo poo” it. don’t be insubordinate (for want of a better term) or deliberately condescending when people are making a genuine attempt to address ISSUES in a serious nature.
OR present your idea AFTER you have given the idea a chance and still think your idea is better.
The sessions are about addressing critical deficiencies within our team. be it, lack of skill all the way through to attendance on booked servers. Support is expected to be positive.
And if anyone thinks I have a personal issue with them please rest assured I will be completely direct in my approach and take it up with you.
I’ll expand probably on my
I’ll expand probably on my points more later but I thought I’d just add to what luck said about that quick opportunity we had to scrim with some other clanners.
The best area for us to find people to quickly scrim with us would be on mirc, specifically irc://irc.ausirc.com/et:qw
So maybe if we did book servers on certain Tuesdays (we could probably quickly load one up straight away through gamecreate, thats how it was done with luck and I) and then went into a few quake wars mirc channels invited a few people and then prac’d that way? Scrims I’m finding out are probably the best way to put our strats (from the strat book and general conversions) into action.
