Revision of Gaming mouses (mice?) from Fri, 16/05/2008 - 10:04

ltmon's picture

I’ve never really bothered getting any real gaming setup going. I actually generally play ET:QW slouched on my couch with a Thinkpad T61P balanced precariously on my lap. My cat likes how warm the graphics card vent gets and squeezes in on my lap as well, occassionally causing me to fire uncontrollably when she drops her weight on the trackpad buttons so apologies for when this happens :)

My mouse for this until now has been a portable Logitech infra-red based thing: great little mouse for just working and keeping in a laptop case, not so good for gaming I guess.

But I’m thinking that a proper mouse might be in order to improve my game a little without putting in all that hard work and practice people keep going on about.

Anyone care to chime in whether a good mouse will make much of a difference? What models are good and cheap? I don’t mind using a wired mouse, as it will be only plugged in for gaming anyway.

I’d be interested in this

I’d be interested in this one too. For years I’ve used a Logitech MX 700 which was expensive and top of the line at the time, but definitely not a gaming mouse. No options for sensitivity plus its cordless which is usually bad for gaming. It would take a bit of getting used to go to back to a corded mouse for me, but if I was going to buy a gaming mouse I’d have to go for that.

Very interested to hear some suggestions – especially on brand.

Logitech...

A couple that I have used…
Logitech G9. Great for gaming but I think some of the buttons are too close to each other and when programmed for different actions will be accidentally pressed. Easy to program and very accurate. 8/10
Logitech G7 wireless. Dont think its available anymore but the best mouse I have ever had. Only problem was remembering to change the battery before a match. Probably should mark it down being wireless but I loved it. 9/10
Logitech G5. Not bad but not enough buttons available for programming. 7/10
Microsoft Habu. Not a bad mouse. Modelled on the Razer and actually thats the software to run it. Fire buttons were extremely sensitive. Bit difficult to program the buttons though. 7/10
Razer Diamondback. Super mouse with one problem…forward/back buttons were on opposite sides of the mouse. Virtually excluded the use of one button. Extremely comfy, accurate, programming was a pain. Would still be using it if it was not for the button issue. 8/10

Those are a few that I have used.

My son Ayum uses the Habu and I now use the G9.
But these are probably at the upper end of the gaming mouse market.
I need every advantage though so thats why I tried all these.

My next mouse will probably be next gen Logitech. I think they make a great series and are reasonably priced.

Cheers

Cheers...

Thanks Pinge.

I might clarify that I probably won’t get into programming macros or having the mouse run macros for me (saw one that could be switched to “double-tap”, “triple-tap” and “quad-tap” for shooting — not my thing).

Wondering mainly about accuracy, speed to getting to target, smoothness etc. Is there noticeable differences with “business level” mice and “gaming level” mice? What about DPI and other measurements the manufacturers apply — do they make a difference or are they just bullshit to sell plastic?

Cheers,

L.

G5

I use a g5, i only got it maybe 3 months ago now. Granted i was at kapooka for a month of that time but i love the mouse! like pingey said its got very few buttons, 2 extras which i used to use for stroyent up/down but dont even bother with any more. theres also the option of pushing the mousewheel to either side as an extra 2 buttons, i havent bothered tho i was thinking of using it for maybe ‘use’ or something.

As far as smoothness goes, this is a helluva lot smoother than the previous mice i’ve used in bf2, aoe2, etc which were dell and mircosoft ones.. i picked up the g5 for about $40 too so it wasnt too bad pricewise.

I reckon the main thing to look for is how they fit your hand, i think big hands fit logitech better but smaller hands are more suited to razrs

Pinge's picture

DPI makes a big difference

DPI makes a big difference in games.
Not for normal work but gaming it is much better to have a bit more…:)
Will be smoother and when you zoom in to distant targets you will notice the difference.
Its a personal thing though and I have mine set all the time on 1000DPI.
The speed in getting on target is faster with more DPI.
But thats the same as mouse sensitivity in game.
Its something most people get wrong in game though.
To set your sensitivity do a 360 deg turn. If you have to move the mouse 2-3 times then you have it about right but any less than that and its too sensitive and you spray shots everywhere.

I too dont use any scripts.
I have the buttons configured to weapons or tools.
So I push the back button and I get the deploy tool, I hit the wheel right button I go back to AR/Lac.
Left wheel button pulls the pistol/blaster and so on.
Helps when I am busy running that i dont have to find more fingers for number keys.

Can config them for flares when in a vehicle too.

Logitech fit real nice in my hand except this G9, thats a bit odd in shape and feel.

Kapooka eh?

Spent my 12 weeks there about 10 years ago now. It was 40 degrees or over every day for 5 weeks running is most of what I remember. Spent the next 5 years in RASigs. They only make you stay in that shithole for a month? I’m jealous.

$40 seems about the right price. The G9’s are $90 (and that’s through wholesale suppliers), so I’m not too keen. I’ll see if I can find one around that mark.

Flares

Bind the damn things to spacebar. It’s not as though it’s used in vehicles normally (except for skiing in the icarus…), and is soooo much faster to reach than ‘1’.

Pinge's picture

I dont use vehicles and

I dont use vehicles and rarely use flares so doesn’t matter what button for me.
I’m too lazy for flares.

Shouldnt tell you that coz if you ever see me in a vehicle you know I aint gonna send up flares…:)

I recently got a G5 too

I recently got a G5 too, it works well for me. Sounds like my setup is similar to Pinge’s, with the buttons bound to tool or weapon selections.

It’s interesting that the weakness he mentions with the Razor Diamondback, i’d actually consider a strength. I used to have a mouse that had forward and back buttons on opposite sides of the mouse, until it broke… but it meant i had a button resting neatly under my pinky finger.

Maybe some gamers dont like to use their pinky finger, but if the button was in the right place on the mouse i’d find it fantastic! The way i see it, most mice out there waste the use of a finger or two (depending on how you hold it). I use all five fingers on my keyboard, why cant i use all five on my mouse too?

Cant offer much advise

Cant offer much advise apart from the obvious..
wireless (think n0mad did the calculations on wired/wireless and he recommends wired IRC) – I use bluetooth, works good for me.

The button on the right for

The button on the right for me was right on the tip.
Being an old wrinkly fella riddled with arthritis and craggy fingers I just couldnt reach the button…:)

RE:Gaming mouses (mice?)

Hi LT

I have narrowed my choices down to the below mice

Logitech® G9 Laser Mouse
Resolution: 200–3200 dpi (user-selectable)
Good button layout, if you have the hands of a 5 year old

Logitech® G5 Laser Mouse
Resolution: 2000/800/400 dpi (user-selectable)
good for the fat fingers :)

The Logitech® G15 keyboard
got to have it… hmmmm glowing keys :)

Razer Copperhead
Resolution: 2000dpi
great tracking, but again with the small hands

Razer Diamondback
Resolution: 1800dpi
looks great, much better button layout.

my 2 cents worth

hey Robag, I got the G15

hey Robag,

I got the G15 and the backlit keyboard is nice as is the lcd screen. mmmm shiny things!

Must say though that as a keyboard (for typing) it is pretty ordinary… doesn’t have the feel to it I would expect for a board in that price range.

RE:hey Robag, I got the G15

I had one more option for a keyboard

The Razer Tarantula http://www.razerzone.com/p-5-the-razer-tarantula-gaming-keyboard.aspx

Wireless vs Wired

Reading up on this more, I found the reason many wireless mouses are out of favour for gaming is because the power saving features can lower performance.

Refresh rate is pushed way down, most especially on those mice designed for laptop computing — like mine is. Also they go into “microsleeps” even if it’s only a second that you don’t use it for and take some time (0.2s or something) to wake up again, causing some jerkiness.

Makes sense: two standard AA batteries last for about 1 year on this logitech, so they must be cutting corners somewhere or other to make that happen.

Pinge's picture

thats where the G7 was so

thats where the G7 was so good.
had a spare battery and lasted about 3-4 hours of continuous play.
