Another one bites the dust(WD Green HDD's)

linuxslacker's picture

the last of my WD green HDD’s has finally started to show signs of failure(already hit and miss with recording according to smartctl its been powered for 3.5 years had it for about 4 would be my guess) i needed more space anyway not a bad drive was dirt cheap and kinda slow but worked well for what i used it for(it handles mostly recordings which prob helped in its fate more then anything and used to hold my videos with another 2TB green till that one failed and i ran out of space. was being used for steam games but now just started to reuse it to expand my video collection)

thinking of replacing it with something like this: WD3003FZEX http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&id2=129&...

* oneday i should do a post about mythtv its such a good media center solution and most of the development is focused on linux(although mac/and to a far lesser extent windows works with reduced features) :)

I have 2

I have 2 4year old 1.5TB WD Greens… Im uncertain as to how they are “going”, but they are full!

As part of a major system overhaul i’ve just grabbed two Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB Barracuda Desktop HDD 3.5” 7200RPM SATA3 Hard Drives for $135 each – from memory i think we’ve discussed in multiple threads that the WDs and the Seagates come out of the same factory?

Other upgrades:
CPU – Intel Core i7 4790K Quad Core LGA 1150 4.0GHz Unlocked CPU Processor
SSD main Drive – Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5” SATA III SSD HBC-MX100D1-256
RAM – Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2× 8GB) DDR3 2133MHz Desktop Memory Red CMY16GX3M2A2133C11R
Memory cooler – Corsair Vengeance Airflow Memory Cooling Fan
Mobo – ASUS Maximus VII Ranger Intel Z97 LGA 1150 ATX Motherboard
added to my previous uprade from a few months back of a GPUEVGA GeForce GTX 780 Dual FTW ACX Cooler Video Card

Some added sexiness to come
CPU cooler: Cooler Master V8 GTS CPU Cooler
Pure buttsex awesomeness: ASUS ROG Front Base Gaming Panel – Dual Bay

Fuzz....

is it OK for shad to have a better system than us? does this mean we need to upgrade again?

Sha8doW's picture

HEY!

Its ok when i only upgrade every 4 years!
Remember i was pushing that GTX285 pretty hard for a LONG time!

You’re safe for now shad, no reason to upgrade just now. Won’t be to far off though…..
N0mad got to love that system!

hasnt been much of a reason

used to be computers doubled in power every year. sadly that hasnt been the case for quite a while. i dont see myself upgrading for quite a while theres really no point

also just got my oculus rift DK2. cant use it yet since they redid the API for the 10th time and only bothered to do the windows side(they said nothing too. they delayed the delivery for the SDK then they announced it absolutely no meantion of no linux/mac version you gotta find out they dont exist by trying to find the download. then after a while oculus finally replies mac/linux coming no eta. gotta feel good to be treated like you dont exist) so now mac/linux users are waiting months for them to redo that side AGAIN. their product might be cool but their API is forever changing and will always only support their version of VR

not to mention the delayed API means all those UE4 and unity demos aswell as others will probably not get a linux demo even though they are already cross platform and most wont go back to upgrade the API just for linux/mac users. it happened for DK1

atleast the delivery was only a little late unlike the kickstarter that took them months(and that was even after they moved the release date :/)

TL:DR
* No need to upgrade these days
* Oculus – good HW, sucky company and software(also now owned by facebook:( )
