New Left 4 Dead DLC Next Month [Aug 04, 2009, 1:06 pm ET]

Valve announces Crash Course, new DLC for Left 4 Dead they will release next month to provide additional content for the zombie shooter. The September DLC release will be 560 points for Xbox 360 and free for Windows:
Entitled “Crash Course,” the latest DLC delivers new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay to both platforms. Targeted for release in September, “Crash Course” bridges the gap between the end of the “No Mercy” campaign and the beginning of “Death Toll” in the original game, expanding the game universe with new locations, new dialogue from the original cast, and an explosive finale

While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of “Crash” is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game’s existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay.

WD-40: Strange Facts and Myths

John S. Barry, the man “who masterminded the spread of WD-40,” as The New York Times puts it, has died at age 84. The product he promoted is more popular than an iPod.

WD-40 can be found in 4 out of 5 American households, the company claims. Its ingredients are a secret, and it has generated its share of myths and strange applications over the years.

Barry didn’t invent the stuff. “Norm Larsen, founder of Rocket Chemical Company, is considered the original founder of WD-40,” according to wd40.com.

Larsen aimed to develop a line of rust-prevention solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry. He succeeded at the goal, Water Displacement, on the 40th attempt, hence the name.

“Convair, an aerospace contractor, first used WD-40 to protect the outer skin of the Atlas Missile from rust and corrosion,” according to the web site.

A few years later the company made an aerosol spray version and the rest, as they say, is history.

L4D Matchmaking Plans [Apr 01, 2009, 8:47 pm ET]

An update to the Left 4 Dead Blog outlines plans to revise the matchmaking system in Left 4 Dead in the future.
The update is written by Dave “Zoid” Kirsch, an old friend from the community who is now apparently at Valve, and he outlines how more matchmaking flexibility is in the works:

In a recent update for L4D on the PC, we provided the option for players to choose between starting a game on an Official server or the Best Available. This is just the first step in giving players control over what servers they play on and the type of experience they have.

This is part of the L4D SDK rollout, which is currently in a closed beta and will be released shortly after the launch of the L4D Survival Pack.
