Logan's Dad

Hey Guys,

I’ve noticed that Logan hasn’t posted anything in here about his Dad. I’m not sure how much he has told you, but here’s the story.

Logan’s Dad suffered a heart attack, and what medically dead for 12 minutes. Logan de-fibrillated him, saving his life. The paramedics arrived to take him to hospital where his condition was found to be a malfunctioning left ventricle (Logan has these details for the medically inclined..!). He stayed in a medically induced coma to keep stress off his heart and his brain. They woke him up to asses his condition, and have found no signs of serious brain damage. He became stressed, and they put him back into the coma. However, to my knowledge, he is in a stable condition out of ICU and in the cardio ward where he is likely to stay for the next few weeks. He needs surgery to give him a pace maker and also what is effectively a small defib.

My temporary leave

Hey Guys,

As some of you will know, I left home and moved into my university hall today. I’m not sure how much time I’m going to have for gaming, at least not for now.

The other thing is that I only get 10GB / mo for internet. I have no idea how much I’ve been using as of late (I’ve been watching to an extent, and my guess is that I have just enough on 10GB). I might drop in now and then, but anything later than 11pm NZDT might be a bit late.

So I am taking a leave of absence until further notice. I still check emails, facebook, IRC, so feel free to chat now and then.

Cheers,

MM

Limited Bandwidth - BF3 doesn't give a shit

Just got back from a week away to find that origin had downloaded a massive 9GB when I turned my computer on. We get 40GB a month with nothing unmetered. Basically, we get 40GB, and that’s that.

So when origin decides to update BF3 without giving any indication, it uses almost 25% of the usage in one hit. We have a usage meter which tells us how much we can use each day so we don’t get capped. We are currently 5GB (12.5%) over the limit for today, and get 1GB/day left.

For this reason, I have to be really frugal with the internet until the 26th hoping not to get capped.

This is really unacceptable, and I’d really appreciate it if somebody could suggest a way of preventing BF3 from installing these updates without permission. I’d rather just not play until the internet resets than not be able to play, use youtube, mumble, or any other internet hog until this time.

Micro returns!

Hey Guys,

As many of you are aware, I went on a 12 day excursion to Fiji. This was a service trip run by my school where we went to the village of Vanuakula to; build a house, tile classroom floors, repair and paint the nun’s convent, and also do some small maintenance jobs around the village.

After spending 10 days in the village, we left for a Resort in Suva. After spending a few hours in Suva at the craft markets, fruit and vegetable markets, and the local Mac Donalds, we left for the “Uprising Resort”. Let me tell you this, if you have ever gone to Fiji, and been to a resort, most of the “Culture” is a total lie. While as the resort, I felt as though I was in a totally new country to the village I had just stayed in. The Fijian’s were totally westernised!

Angry at Ubuntu / Canonical

Hey Guys,

tl;dr I need a new linux that doesn’t use pulseaudio in anyway to replace my stock distribution of Ubuntu

I’m getting frustrated with Ubuntu not doing what I want it to do. More specifically the extent of pulseaudio’s integration meaning that good ol’ ALSA support is very lacking. The problem is, by removing pulseaudio I am unable to use my microphone. By using pulseaudio, I have to put up with the 1S speech delay on my microphone.

I’m not really sure if pulseaudio is a GNOME decision, or an Ubuntu decision. Something needs to be done. I can’t stay with Ubuntu because it’s just not working. I also think unity sucks, and it’s where Ubuntu is headed.

Anyway, the point of this post is to ask those in IPX running linux systems for suggestions to a new linux distro. I have tried Debian in the past, and really hated it so that’s out.

#teamipx

Hey Guys,

No, it’s not a twitter “hash tag”, it’s an IRC server address.

For those of you who don’t know, Team IPX has an IRC server. Hashy, Kazashi, and myself can regularly be seen in there. We are usually around for a chat (although us sitting in chat AFK is not uncommon at all).

Why not drop by? I understand some of you don’t like IRC, and I’d really like to know why. It’s a good place for IPXers to chat without mumble or steam. If you don’t know how to connect: http://teamipx.net/chat. There are instructions for how to use your own client, or you can use the embedded client.

Cheers,

MM

Who's keen for a go at this?

Hey Guys,

Just wondering who, in the minecraft community of IPX, is keen for a go at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcsN3d7eKgY

I’ll host a server, and restrict it to 2 – 3 people. First in first served, as my server has a player limit :-P. I will experiment with using another computer as a server, but it has fewer resources than I do..

Cheers,

MM
